Nicaragua will “soon” join Paris climate accord: President

Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega told a Wednesday, September 20 meeting of World Bank senior executives that he will sign the Paris climate accord joining every country except for the US and Syria in the pledge, according to a report from state-run television station 100% Noticias.

“We are soon going to endorse, will sign the agreement in Paris. We have had meetings addressing the issue and have already scheduled the accession of Nicaragua and the signing of the agreement.”

This is contrary to previous remarks from Nicaraguan lead envoy Paul Oquist, who called voluntary responsibility a “path to failure” in a 2015 interview with Climate Home.

The agreement aims to keep the planet’s temperature rise below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial rivals, according to the United Nations.
