One dead after ride malfunctions at Ohio State Fair

According to Columbus Division of Fire Batallion Chief Steve Martin, one of the rows of seats on the Fire Ball ride "snapped off."

An 18-year-old man is dead and seven others are injured after a ride malfunctioned at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus on Wednesday, July 26, according to the city’s Division of Fire.

Battalion Chief Steve Martin said that two people are in stable condition, including a 13-year-old.

According to Martin, one of the rows of seats on the Fire Ball ride “snapped off.”

Ohio Governor John Kasich said during a news conference that the ride was inspected multiple times, including by a third party inspector. However, 11 other rides weren’t inspected in time for today’s opening and four rides failed a “mechanical test.”

Kasich has ordered all rides at the fair to be shut down. They will remain closed until they’ve been reinspected.

I am terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio’s fair. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those grieving and injured. I have ordered a full investigation into this incident and have ordered that all fair rides be shut down until additional safety inspections can be completed.”
