Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepping down as DNC chair

Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced on Sunday that she would step down from the role after the party’s convention this week. It comes after a WikiLeaks hack into the party’s internal emails revealed that she and top aides actively attempted to undermine Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid.

“I know that electing Hillary Clinton as our next president is critical for America’s future,” Wasserman Schultz said. “I look forward to serving as a surrogate for her campaign in Florida and across the country to ensure her victory. Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention.”

“I don’t think she is qualified to be the chair of the DNC, not only for these awful emails, which revealed the prejudice of the DNC, but also because we need a party that reaches out to working people and young people, and I don’t think her leadership style is doing that,” Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said in a statement.

According to the DNC, vice chair Donna Brazile will serve as interim chairperson through the election.
